If you’re new here you may wonder what’s up with the Johnny Cash references. Here’s an explanation in 5 bullets.
I love music, it’s my art medium that moves me most. It gives me direction when I have none. Whether you see it or not, music influences a lot of themes around the shop.
In those handful of quiet years when my kids were young and I wasn’t working full-time, I made a point of NOT shopping at all on Black Friday. Instead we’d hang around the house and play games or make cookies or decorate the house and we’d listen to Johnny Cash all day (giving me direction when I had none…). I called it Man in Black Friday. Downtime with family is better than shopping. Plus, I think Johnny Cash's music aligns with the purpose of Advent beautifully.
I opened a store. It would be a poor business decision to be closed and eschew shopping on Black Friday, right? I asked myself how I'd reconcile my ridiculous principles and my practical business-owning side. I decided to bring the Man in Black to work. I’m in charge so I get to choose the music!
The Tea & Oranges approach to Black Friday sales is that we give our customers 20% off everything black from the Friday to Sunday after Thanksgiving. T&O is basically a stylish little mom & pop shop, and I just want to be super straightforward that there is no way small businesses like ours can compete with Black Friday deals - it would murder our small businesses if we tried. I hope this novel (and not significant discount) is a fun way to draw in customers and encourage you to shop small during the holidays.

The song, Man in Black. I believe getting dressed can be a type of personal expression. For me, it’s a way to direct my attention or mood. If you see me wearing red, it’s because I need a kick in the pants. I wear prints when I need to lighten up. When I wear black it’s my way of signaling that it’s not about me (direct your attention elsewhere) and I think there’s some overlap between what Johnny Cash and I are trying to communicate in our wardrobe choices. Or maybe I’m just been conditioned to dress like this when I feel this way because I love Johnny Cash in all these ways.
Favorite Johnny Cash tune? Mine is ‘I Hung My Head.’
