Cougar & Serpent Slate 135cm Silk/Wool
Pieces from Sabina Savage feature designs hand drawn by Sabina Savage, depicting scenes based on fact, but which have blossomed in her imagination.
This design features a twisting cougar as she clashes with a writhing serpent, surrounded by growing fruit & vines. ‘As the sun began to rise over the wild fruit fields, I drew the pomegranates, figs and persimmons, surrounded by glorious wildflowers. Without warning, a magnificent cougar leapt through the branches, struggling and twirling as a serpent wrapped around her. She looked directly into my eyes for a second, and in a flash, they were gone.’ – Albertus Seba
This piece is from Sabina's "Naturalist's Handbook" collection, referencing the work of Victorian zoological and botanical illustrators who ventured to unknown lands in hopes of discovering new and exotic species. This collection also focuses on the Fraktur folk art movement in 19th century America, a movement started by Dutch settlers in Pennsylvania in the late 1700s.
